Please pray for and support the churches of Japan

Great Earthquake and Tidal Waves in Northern Japan, March 2011

On March 11, 2011 one of the strongest earthquakes in recorded human history hit just off the north west coast of Japan. Uncounted buildings crumbled, roads, railways, water, power and communication lines were cut, leaving towns and villages instantly and completely cut off from the outside world. Moments later, tsunami alarms were raised and the world watched in horror as tidal waves of up to 30 feet high slammed into hundreds of miles of coastland, running as far as four miles inland, washing away whole towns and communities.

Known casualties are already staggering in number, but those numbers have only scratched the surface as rescue teams have yet to reach all stricken areas. And as this is being written, the nation is still struggling to regain control of damaged nuclear reactors in order to prevent melt down and atomic disaster. Nearly half a million people are homeless, evacuated to temporary shelter. Depending on the reactor situation, that number could also greatly increase.

Surely no one fails to see that Japan needs prayer.

And as the churches in the stricken area need your prayer as well, as they reach out to their communities as the hands and feet of God. Though this area of Japan is perhaps its least churched, there are believers there ready to offer their ravaged neighbors a 'cup of water' in Jesus' name. Unfortunately, having suffered the same tragedy themselves, they only have what the quake left behind -- cracked, leaky cups -- to offer.

Japan is in dire straights, the need is huge beyond imagining, and hunger, illness, exposure are going to claim many more souls. Fortunately, aid is flowing in from around the world. We who live here can only hope it will be enough.

However, we are going to have to look to churches and fellow believers around the world to extend a helping hand to the churches and Christians in the earthquake zone. The church throughout Japan is already mobilized and helping their brothers in the north. But Japan has been resistant to the gospel, churches and Christians are few, and the task they face is impossibly huge.

We ask for you help for the churches and believers of Japan. In addition to our 24/7 Christian radio broadcast, one of BJapan's ministries is "Church Support" -- providing practical help and financial support to the smaller local churches so they can hold special evangelistic meetings, hold seminars for believers and pastors, provide counseling and care for pastors and church leaders, and more.

We can use our network of connections to get your gifts to the congregations in the disaster area, so they can get their own churches in order. And even more importantly, so they can get the resources they need to reach their neighbors with the love of the gospel manifested in food, water, clothing and other material needs, as well as the comfort of a listening ear, a warm embrace and the encouragement that comes in hearing there is a God who loves them and cares for them even in the midst of suffering.

Mission Statement

BJapan is the Tokyo affiliate of Back to the Bible. Back to the Bible is a global Christian evangelistic and service media ministry. With a goal of bringing Christians to spiritual maturity, active in the church and society, we provide support and projects using media and other means. Also, for those who do not yet know Christ, we teach the Bible and eagerly proclaim the gospel.

Our Vision ~ What we want to accomplish

"Let's get Back to the Bible!" With that rallying cry, we want to meet the needs of Christians, and lead to a vital, growing church in Japan.

Our Mission ~ What we seek now

• As we work, we're envisioning the Christian Church in Japan 20 years from now. What must we do so that the future Church in Japan, in all parts of the country, in both small and large congregations, are even more energized than today, excercising its gifts in the joyful service of the Lord?

• We're working in cooperation with the local church and other parachurch organizations.
